Products, payments, shipping, design and integrations: what really drives the price of an online store, and where it is worth spending.

Online stores range from a simple catalogue with a payment button to a full commerce platform connected to inventory, accounting and delivery partners. Here is what moves the price, so you can plan a sensible first version.

Catalogue size and complexity

Twenty products with a single price are simple. Thousands of products with sizes, colours, bundles, wholesale prices and stock per warehouse need careful data structure, filters and search.

Payments

UPI, cards and net banking through a payment gateway are standard. Cash on delivery, partial COD, EMI, wallets and international cards each add setup and testing.

Shipping and delivery

Flat-rate shipping is simple. Pin-code serviceability, weight-based rates, multiple couriers, automatic airway bills and tracking pages add real value but also development time.

Design

A ready-made theme gets you online quickly. A custom design built around your products, brand and customers usually converts better, especially on mobile, where most Indian shoppers buy.

Customer features

Accounts, wish lists, reviews, coupons, loyalty points, referral programmes and abandoned-cart reminders all help repeat sales. Most stores do not need all of them on day one.

Integrations

Connecting the store to accounting software, an ERP, a WhatsApp Business API account, marketplaces or a CRM saves hours of manual work but adds scope.

Admin and operations

Think about the people running the store: order processing, returns, refunds, GST invoices, stock updates and reports. A clear admin saves more money over time than almost any front-end feature.

Where to spend first

  1. Fast, clear product pages on mobile.
  2. A checkout with the payment options your customers prefer.
  3. Reliable shipping and order updates.
  4. An admin your team finds easy.

Everything else can follow in phase two, once you know what your customers use.
