What affects the cost of a mobile app?
Platforms, features, backend and design: what decides the budget and timeline of an Android or iOS app, and how to plan a smart first version.
"How much does an app cost?" has no single answer, because an app is usually three products: the app itself, a backend server and an admin panel. Here is what shapes the budget.
Android, iOS or both
Cross-platform frameworks such as Flutter let one codebase run on both Android and iOS, which usually costs much less than two separate native apps. In India, many businesses launch on Android first, where most of their customers are.
The backend and admin panel
Logins, data, payments, notifications and reports live on a server. Your team needs an admin panel to manage users, content and orders. This is often as much work as the app.
Features
Each feature adds design, development and testing: user accounts, payments, maps and location, chat, push notifications, offline mode, file uploads, video, integrations with other systems.
Design
Clear, accessible screens built around a few core tasks are what make people keep an app. Custom design and prototypes cost more up front and save money on rework.
Testing and launch
Apps must be tested on different phones and screen sizes, then submitted to Google Play and the App Store with screenshots, descriptions and privacy details.
After launch
Operating system updates, new phones and user feedback mean apps need regular updates. Plan a monthly budget for maintenance from the start.
How to plan a smart first version
- Pick the one job the app must do brilliantly.
- List the features needed for that job only.
- Launch, measure what people use, then build phase two.
